Our Approach

At Charlie Holiday, our aim is to design and manufacture our garments with greater care, to reduce our impact on the planet and generate awareness around conscious designand consumption.

We are the first to admit that this is a work in progress, and we are still learning. As an independent, family-owned-and-run business, we will continue to evolve our processes, finding better, more efficient ways of doing things, all while maintaining transparency.

DESIGN + MANUFACTURING

Design:
We embrace slow fashion principles at Charlie Holiday. We design four seasons
/collections a year, ensuring we only create pieces women will love and have in their wardrobes for years to come. Rather than being solely driven by trends or profit, we strive to produce collections with an innate sense of style that defy age and time.

Manufacturing:
We consciously manufacture our product in two small family-run factories in China which we visit annually. Our goal is to minimise the negative impacts that are linked to manufacturing and to make sure all people associated with our brand are treated fairly and respectfully at all times. Our goal for the next five years is to analyse and document our entire supply chain to ensure we know the source of every thread, button and trim and ensure each supplier meets our sustainability standards.

DYEING+ PRINTING

We use digital printing for both our yardages and graphics at Charlie Holiday. Digital printing creates less waste overall than conventional methods of textile printing. Less ink is wasted and less chemicals and water is used in the process. Each season we work with Australian graphic and textile designers to develop our exclusive custom prints. We love supporting local talent and nurturing emerging designers.

OUR FIBRES

Our collections are designed with a growing list of natural fibres such as linen, organic cotton and Tencel. In 2021 we begin the process of converting our fabrics to sustainable/eco-friendly options. We are excited to introduce the use of recycled fibres in our new-season swim collection which marks a turning point in our ethical journey. Made from 76% recycled polyester and 24% spandex, it feels luxurious but is kinder to the earth, minimising waste.

PACKAGING

Our packaging is minimal and designed to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Charlie Holiday garments are protected by a 100% compostable and biodegradable bag largely made from corn starch and other plant-based material. They’re shipped to you in a reusable mailbag that’s also derived from corn starch, and again is fully compostable and biodegradable.

Once you’ve unwrapped your purchase (and marvelled at its magnificence) save the corn starch bags. Reuse them around the house or save them to mail a gift to a friend. You can even add the biodegradable packaging to your home compost or worm farm (we like to cut them into strips to help the worms along) where they’ll break down completely, feeding the earth in the process. Also, our marketing material is 100% recycled card and fully recyclable.

OUR TEAM

Founded in 2018 by Pete de Gail, Charlie Holiday draws inspiration from our travels and the world we love to explore. As an independent, family owned-and-run business, Charlie Holiday is committed to reducing the impact we have on this world. We have assessed our everyday practices in our offices and fulfilment centre to minimise our ecological footprint. We support the local cafés and stores and stock our kitchen to avoid the need for single-use items. We’ve given every employee a reusable coffee cup to help reduce waste. Everything from the cleaning products we use to our everyday office supplies are as green as they can get.

Our offices are largely paperless – no paper invoices! – and we are diligent about recycling. Our product packaging is 100% compostable and biodegradable. We are committed to educating our team about sustainable practices and we review our company policies annually to ensure that we are always evolving and improving. We are committed to treating each other, our customers and our suppliers with respect and we’ll continue to make conscious choices about how we live and work.

Locations: Sydney, NSW and Burleigh Heads, Queensland
Number of employees: 10 - 40% women 60% men
